Because of the success of Manny Pacquaio and other Filipino boxers, the Filipino’s interest in boxing is being revived. Boxing, like badminton and billiards, is becoming among the popular sports for Filipinos in the Philippines.

For Filipinos in California, USA, who want to share our kabayayan’s renewed interest in boxing, there is a San Diego fitness club that could help: The Boxing Club, which calls itself “the largest boxing and kickboxing for fitness program in the country.”

It has four locations in San Diego, includes “world class trainers” like Mel Menor, and Dean Lister, and has “dedicated, friendly staff to assist you in reaching your goals.”

Superman Returns

In the movie “Superman Returns,” journalist Lois Lane cannot begin writing an article on why the world needs Superman. With his super breath, Superman could repair the damage caused by the oil spill in Guimaras and nearby areas in a few minutes, probably even seconds–a task that could take six months to one year when done with ordinary human strength. Maybe he could also pressure Petron to be more responsible and convince government officials to place public interests before that of the big corporations.

Ninoy On The Killings

On October 25, 1968, in a speech entitled “A Peace Plan for Central Luzon,” the late Senator Benigno Aquino delivered before a civic group, he said:

“There have been too many killings, my brothers and sisters. And these, we decry. The massacre of poor and hapless Muslim boys on Corregidor has yet to be explained. And now the list of unexplained killings in Central Luzon lengthens by the day.”

These words, utterred before the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law, could very well be a description of current affairs in the country, especially in Central Luzon.

The situation is just one of the too many similarities between the Marcos and Arroyo regimes. On the issue of political killings, here are more comparisons.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Last year, during the height of the Hello Garci controversy, this text joke was circulated among Filipino texters:

“Sa dami ng mga batikos hindi magawang magsalita ng ating presidente. Bakit? Mahirap na. Baka mabosesan!”

During the recent House Committe on Justice deliberation that junked the the impeachment complaint against the de facto President, Pateros-Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano placed on the podium a piece of paper with these words: “Takot, Ayaw Sumagot. Kasi Guilty?” (more…)
