Cosmetic surgery in the Philippines has flourished as an industry only in the recent years, with more and more celebrities admitting that they’ve gone through such procedures. Many movie stars deny going through the knife, but it’s obvious anyway.

The funny thing is, like amnesia, plastic and cosmetic surgeons have always been important characters in many Filipino romance novels and movies.

Cinderella plots like that of a poor girl who married a rich man, or stories with a central character who had to be in disguise usually involve plastic surgery. Why don’t we try to come up with a list and post such stories and movies here?

The first Philippine Medical Tourism Congress, Expo and Launch was held last month at Philippine International Convention Center. It had the tagline “Only in the Philippines: Tender Loving (Health)Care.”

According to an official press release of the event, President Arroyo’s signing of Executive Order 372 in 2004 signaled the launch the Philippine Medical Tourism Program through a public-private sector initiative. “Envisioned as a vital catalyst to fuel the country’s economy in the near future, the Arroyo Administration has included Medical Tourism in its Philippine Medium Term Development Plan,” the release further said.

As cosmetic enhancements are part of the medical tourism program, this is good news for Filipino cosmetic surgeons.
